Sunna Hansdóttir Swedish, b. 1987

Swedish artist Sunna Hansdóttir’s (b.1987, Karlstad, Sweden) vibrant work revolves around a strong emphasis on color and the intersection of shades. Her artistic journey includes studies in Textile at Stenebyskolan, culminating in a BFA in Textile and an MFA in Craft at Konstfack, Stockholm, in 2014 and 2019, respectively. Her background in textiles is evident in her art, where textile motifs play a prominent role.

Hansdóttir's main artistic interest lies in exploring the possibilities arising from the materiality of the canvas for contemporary art practices. Her paintings, enriched with water-based colors and a top oil coat, feature recurring figures and vibrant colors, creating a visual language marked by tension, contrast, and peace. The artist skillfully blends different skills and inspirations, drawing from silk and linen to fine weave and rough fibers canvas, and even Icelandic lava sand. This amalgamation fuses the tradition of painting with her textile craft background, resulting in a unique and layered body of work. Hansdóttir's ability to traverse traditional boundaries and merge diverse influences positions her as a promising force in the contemporary art scene, where her experimentation and defiance of artistic norms contribute to her innovative presence.

Noteworthy solo exhibitions such as 'Som jag minns det' at Rackstadmuseet, Arvika, and 'Röd sol blå rep' at Gävle Konstcentrum, Gävle, showcase her ability to create immersive visual experiences. In group exhibitions like 'Notions of Female Leadership' at Art Athina, Dio Horia Gallery, Athens, and 'Sexy Food' at Dotdotdot, Stockholm, Hansdóttir's work stands out for its innovative approach to color, form, and texture.
