Aleksandar Todorovic (b.1982, Belgrade) graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Belgrade. Todorovic makes politically engaged art that tackles some of the most urgent and sobering issues of our times. As an artist who has grown up during the Balkan civil wars of the 1990’s, he is sensitive about political systems and their effect on the world. At the very core of his artistic investigations lies the concept of evil, which he approaches from different angles attempting to understand its origins and its ramifications. Todorovic's use of traditional Byzantine painting techniques and materials has received attention and critical acclaim internationally. In his artworks he often deploys gold leaf, egg tempera and wood with the same way as they are used in century-old Byzantine icons to sarcastically depict present-day politicians and influential figures as orthodox saints. His Byzantine-inspired works are intentionally made to look old in order to appear like relics from the past — like prophecies or warnings about the state of the world we live in. In the Eastern Christian tradition, an iconostasis is an ornate structure that separates the sanctuary from the main area of a church, and consists of several rows of hand-painted icons. Todorovic follows the same layered format for his presentation as the Orthodox iconostases, in an attempt to describe and understand complicated power structures and visualize concepts that are far beyond our immediate grasp. Todorovic has exhibited his works internationally at various institutions, including the Contemporary Art Gallery at Smederevo Museum. He has been featured in magazines, such as HEY!, Neuroblasto, Ideafixa and Superpaper. International art websites like Artforum International, Juxtapoz, Widewalls, have also featured his work.
