Begin Again: Group Presentation
The double-headed Roman god Janus, who lends his name to the first month of each year, is privileged to see both the future and the past. Begin Again is Dio Horia’s first exhibition of the new year and, at the same time, the exhibition that bridges the gallery’s earlier program with its future direction.
The year 2025 marks the beginning of a new chapter in Dio Horia’s ethos. To look back in order to think about the present, to use interpersonal intimacy as a key to understanding collective memory, to challenge and illuminate in the service of cultivating an open field where a multiplicity of interpretations can spring forward, and where human agency can be cultivated. After years of focusing on development and discovery of unknown artists and on broadening the geographical, economic, and gender scope of the art scene in Greece, the gallery’s central mission now is to incubate opposition to the worldwide political climate of exclusion while cultivating acceptance of cultural difference and a belief in equal opportunities for all.
This exhibition is a re-birth day party and a re-inauguration. Included in the show are 8 gallery artists whose work moves in step with Dio Horia’s new objective to provide a stage for the art that emphatically belongs to our time and strives to say something about the world that shaped it—and that deliberately pushes boundaries in order to do so: Maja Djordjevic, Dora Economou, Amir H. Fallah, Elias Kafouros, Laure Mary, Ally Rosenberg, The Callas, and Aleksandar Todorovic.
The works in the exhibition highlight how the socio-political circumstances of the past decades have, and continue to, shape people’s daily lives and livelihoods. They refer to various local and global events, from the current anti-corruption uprisings in Serbia, to the exhaustion of race-, gender-, and class-marginalization as a chronic condition of existence. Together, these pieces represent how politics affect life, culture, and tradition in ways that are both material and immaterial.
